Michael Werner was drafted from West Torrens at number 9 in the 1988 in the National Draft. He was originally from the ACT where he played school football and Teal Cup.

He was a versatile key position player and most of his 40 games for Essendon were in attack, particularly at full-forward. He kicked a total of 58 goals and was named Best Team Man in 1992.

Werner was traded to Sydney in 1993 where he played 20 games and kicked 20 goals. He went on to coach in Queensland.

He later played with Gisborne and kicked a record 173 goals in the 1997 Riddell District Football League season.
