A high flying forward, Wellington came from Hopetoun to the Under 19s in 1972 and graduated to the seniors towards the end of that season. He played many good games without being able to retain a regular senior spot. He was a consistent goalkicker, his best being five goals against Footscray in 1973.
He won Essendon's Best Clubman award in 1974, having previously won the Reserves Most Valuable Player award in 1972. He was also the runner-up in the Reserves Best and Fairest in 1976.
After leaving Essendon, he went to Yarraville in 1977 before transferring to Pennant Hills in Sydney and then to Southport in Queensland. He then became captain-coach of Kedron and later played with Beenleigh in that state.
He died of cancer on 12th July, 1987, aged only 33.
