Bob Thompson was a back pocket and rover who came to the Under 19s from Castlemaine in 1966.

His career was hampered by chronic cramp and he only played eight games over four seasons. However, he was a member of the Reserves premiership side in 1968.

Thompson played with Subiaco in Western Australia in 1972. He joined VFA club Preston in 1973 then returned to play with Castlemaine in 1974.

He returned to Essendon in 1975 as assistant coach of the Under 19s.

Thompson became assistant coach of Keilor in 1985 and then coach of Essendon Grammar Old Boys in 1986 and 1987.
