Bill "Sherry" Thompson was a half-back flanker from Alexandra.
He played 17 games between 1967 and 1969 after showing early promise.
Thompson was drafted into the Army in 1970 and served in Vietnam.
On his return, he joined Williamstown from 1972 to 1975 and captained that club in 1975. He then went to Dandenong from 1976 to 1979 and won the Liston Trophy for Best and Fairest in the Association in 1977. He was vice-captain of the VFA state side in 1978 and 1979.
Thompson then became captain-coach of Frankston Peninsula from 1980 to 1982, and continued to play with that club until 1986.
He became Chairman of Selectors at St Kilda Football Club in 1989.
Thompson moved to Wodonga in 1993 and was Chairman of Selector of the Wodonga Raiders in 1994 and 1995. He settled in Wodonga after his retirement from football.
