Richie Thomas was a robust half-back with plenty of ability and a big leap. He came to Essendon from East Perth, where he had played from 1935 to 1941. He had been Best and Fairest there in 1939 and 1940.
He was the subject of a clearance wrangle with Carlton when he joined Essendon while doing an Army course. He played only four games for Essendon before spending the War years representing the Army in the Services competition.
Thomas returned to East Perth in 1945 and played there until 1948. He represented Western Australia on four occasions.
He remained as physical training instructor with East Perth until 1962.
Richard Thomas died on 30th July 1988.
