Bill Speakman came from Coburg, where he played in their 1926 premiership team.

He was a pacy rover and one of Essendon's shortest-ever players at only 157 cm. He played 16 games with Essendon before breaking his leg in early 1929, which effectively ended his VFL career.

Speakman went to Albury later in 1929 before returning to Coburg in 1930.

He was a cousin of noted athletics coach and Essendon stalwart, Fergie Speakman.

Bill Speakman died on 2nd May, 1960.
