SMITH, Ron

Ron Smith was a snowy-haired wingman from Werribee. He played 11 games between 1939 and 1941.

He was a member of the Seconds team which won a sensational Grand Final against Fitzroy in 1941. Just as the game ended (in a 17 point win to Essendon), the skirmishes that had started after an Essendon player was felled turned into a major brawl. The Essendon players finally left the ground with Percy Bushby carrying the captain-coach, Harry Collier, shoulder high; they felt they had won both the game and the fight. Both teams were reported for unseemly conduct.

After leaving Essendon, Smith played 32 games with North Melbourne between 1942 and 1944.

His brothers also played League football: Max, seven games for Essendon in 1940, and Clive, two games for North Melbourne in 1944.

Ron Smith died on 21st January 1979.
