Henry Slattery was drafted with number 46 in the 2004 AFL National Draft. He was a solid left-footed half back flanker. He took some time to develop in his role mainly due to injuries in his first three years at the Club, but steadily improved to finish equal ninth in the Club's Best and Fairest awards in 2008 and tenth in 2009. He had won the Most Courageous Player in 2008.
He only played two games in 2012 so nominated for the 2012 Draft. He was not picked up by an AFL club so returned to Adelaide and played with Port Adelaide in the SANFL in 2013 and 2014. He also acted as the club's player welfare manager.
He had always been interested in wine-making and, while playing at Essendon had studied agricultural science and later completed a Masters degree in oenology with the help of the AFLPA Education and Training grants. He began working at the Barossa Valley Estate in 2015 and played football with Nuriootpa alongside ex-team mate, Jay Nash. He had planned to become senior coach of Nuriootpa in 2016, but was unable to do so due to his suspension.
His mother, Andrea Slattery, won the AFLPA/ Kangaroos Network of Women (KNOW) Mother of the Year award in 2008. She was CEO of the Self Managed Super Funds Professionals’ Association of Australia but was nominated by Henry for her support towards his and his brothers' holistic development. Two of his brothers studied medicine and the third became a lawyer.
