Bert Salkeld, known as "Baron", was a follower from Melbourne (VFA). He played 15 games in Essendon's VFA team in 1896 and was a member of Essendon's first VFL side in 1897. He played a further four games that year.
He then went away to fight in the Second Boer War in South Africa with his team-mate, George Cochrane. He was attached to the Home Appointed Civil Surgeons unit.
Salkeld later went to university in Scotland to complete his medical studies and is reported to have introduced the game there. After graduating, he worked for a number of years as a surgeon at the Northern Hospital in Liverpool. When World War I broke out he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
He died in London on 26th May, 1917. His death was not related to his military service.
