Bert Ryan was a full-back from West Melbourne where he played from 1903 to 1906. Prior to that, he had played with Albion United. While at West Melbourne he played in their 1906 premiership and topped the Association's goalkicking list in 1903 and 1904 (tied both times with Richmond's Jack Hutchinson).
He debuted for Essendon in Round 1, 1908, and played 13 consecutive games until Round 14, then played his final game in Round 17. Despite this consistency, he was not selected for any of the finals.
Ryan then went to Brighton in 1909 and later joined Northcote where he played from 1910 to 1913. In all, he played 111 games with VFA teams and kicked 197 goals.
He died on 29th October, 1952.
