Bill Robinson was the most talented of the three Robinson brothers who all played with Essendon at the same time (the others were Alex and Fred). Their brother, Gordon, played one game for St Kilda in 1911.
He came from Footscray (VFA) where he played from 1898 to 1900 and prior to that Brighton Juniors and Brighton Grammar School.
Robinson played in the ruck in the premiership team in 1901 and was also selected in the State team against South Australia in that year.
He left Essendon for a year in 1903 and captained the premier team of the Metropolitan Association. He was captain of Essendon in 1905.
After returning in 1904, Robinson only missed two games until he left after 6 rounds in 1906. All three brothers played together eight times in 1904.
He walked out on a matter of principle over a dispute involving Fred Hiskens in 1906.
Robinson returned to Brighton where he played between 1908 and 1911 before transferring to Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields Association in Western Australia in 1912.
