Alan Reid was a talented wingman who came from East Fremantle in Western Australia. He had played for Western Australia in state of origin games before joining Essendon.
He was a fast and exciting mover, who had the supporters buzzing when he got the ball, but he was dogged by stomach and leg injuries, and then an ankle injury put him out for most of 1982.
Reid was Essendon's equal second top Brownlow Medal vote scorer in 1979.
He was cleared to Geelong in the middle of the 1983 season and played seven games there.
A lawyer, Reid later moved to Beijing, China, where he worked at the Australian Embassy as Minister Commercial and Senior Trade Commissioner then at Fosters China Limited as chief operating officer, during the 1990s. He later owned and was managing director of Intercedent (Beijing) Ltd.
