Rob Newton was a handy left-foot half-forward and utility player who came to Essendon from East Ringwood.

He played only one game in 1973 but was runner-up in the Reserves Best and Fairest award. He played eight out of the first 14 games of 1974 before missing the rest of the season with glandular fever. He had two consistent seasons in 1975 and 1976, but struggled for a regular game in 1977 and 1978.

Newton stood out of football in 1979, then returned to East Ringwood in 1980 and 1981. He played with Doutta Stars in 1982 and 1983, and represented the Essendon District League in 1983. He then returned to East Ringwood in 1984 and 1985 and was leading goalkicker in the Eastern District League in 1984.
