Rod McFarlane was a bespectacled full-forward who came from Coburg Amateurs. As a youngster, he had played in the 1964 Victorian Schoolboys' Team.
He played four games for Essendon in 1971 before having a knee reconstruction operation.
McFarlane headed the League Reserves grade goalkicking list in 1972 with 62 goals.
He played with Prahran from 1973 to 1976. He returned to Coburg Amateurs in 1979 and coached that club from 1980 to 1982, winning the flag in 1981.
