Player Profile

Justin McCarthy was a fine centre half-forward who came from Brighton where he played from 1919 to 1921. Prior to that, he played three games with Carlton in 1913 and 1914 and then with Footscray (VFA) in 1915.

While he lacked a bit of pace McCarthy was a good mark and position player. He was Essendon's second top goalkicker in 1923 and equal third top in 1922. He played an important role as the strong man in the 1923 premiership team and was also a member of the 1924 premiership side.

McCarthy also played against Footscray (VFA) in the controversial charity game at the end of 1924 when some Essendon players were accused of taking bribes to lose the game.

He was selected in the State side in 1923 and 1925.

McCarthy rejoined Brighton in late 1926.

He was a member of a family of famous boxers.

McCarthy died on 26th February, 1981.
