Leo Maynes came from Fitzroy where he played 15 games between 1935 and 1937. Prior to that he had played 62 games with Brunswick.

He played his last game for Fitzroy in Round 1, 1937, against St Kilda before transferring to Essendon. His first game for Essendon was in Round 9 and St Kilda was again the opposition.

He started as a back pocket and then became a utility player and he was a real trier and great clubman. He was Essendon's equal third top Brownlow Medal vote winner in 1938.

Maynes also won Essendon Second Eighteen Best and Fairest award in 1940 and 1941 and played in the ruck in the Seconds premiership side in 1941.

He had the unusual distinction of winning the League Ballroom dancing championship in 1940.

Maynes then joined the Army in March 1942 and served in New Guinea and Borneo during World War II which effectively ended his football career.

He retired in 1977 from his job as a wood machinist and died on 4th August, 1998.
