John May was a wingman and rover who came from West Coburg to the Under 19s in 1969. He won the Most Consistent Player award in 1969 and was the Under 19s captain in 1970. He then graduated to the Reserves before playing his first senior game in Round 14, 1970, in a loss to South Melbourne. He played the next two games, both losses.
He left Essendon after a year in the Reserves in 1971 to play with Montmorency from 1972 to 1974 and then with Parkdale in 1975 and 1976. He represented the Federal League.
May then moved to Caloundra in Queensland from 1977 to 1979 and won the award for Best and Fairest in the Sunshine Coast League in 1978.
He returned to Melbourne to play an occasional game with Parkdale until 1984.
