Bob Mathews was a back pocket player who came from North Melbourne where he had played 58 games from 1929 to 1934. Prior to that, he had played with Melrose.
His only two games for Essendon were in Rounds 11 and 12 for a one point win over his old club, North Melbourne, and a 19 point loss to Melbourne.
Mathews then went on to play with local club, La Mascotte, in 1936 and 1937.
He enlisted in the RAAF on 31st May 1944.
He retired in 1977 after working as a driver with the Defence Department for nearly fifty years.
Mathews died on 14th April, 1989.
