Ernie Lumsden became a fine rover and forward who arrived at Essendon from Collingwood where he played 15 games between 1910 and 1912. Prior to that he played with Northcote.
Nicknamed "Snowy", Lumsden was tough and extremely dangerous around the goals. He headed Essendon's goalkicking in 1914 with 28 goals. The year before, in his first season in 1913, he was second top scorer. He kicked seven goals in one game in 1914 and five goals twice in that year.
Lumsden later returned to Collingwood and played 63 more games between 1917 and 1920. He was a member of Collingwood's premiership teams in 1917 and 1919, and the losing team in 1918.
He was a cousin of Collingwood champion Dick Lee, and later served on the Collingwood committee from 1927 to 1950 and was on the selection committee for a time.
As a youngster he had sold The Herald newspaper at John Wren's illegal betting shop in Collingwood.
Ernie Lumsden died on 8th August, 1982.
