Peter Light was a ruck-rover and forward from Dimboola. As a young footballer he had been selected in the Under 17 Victorian national championship team in 1977. The team included five more future Essendon players: Michael Sheldon, Glenn Hawker, Roger Merrett, Justin Madden and Craig Barbary.
His only games for Essendon were in Rounds 12 (as a reserve) and 19 in a loss to North Melbourne and a win over Footscray.
He won the Reserves Most Courageous Player award in 1981.
Light went to Melbourne in 1982 but did not play any senior games, before becoming captain-coach of Horsham from 1983 to 1986. He won the Wimmera League Best and Fairest award in 1983 and 1984.
He became captain-coach of Port Fairy in 1987.
