Player Profile

Wayne "Jex" Headlam was a big, strong ruckman who came from Pascoe Vale to the Under 19s in 1965. He won the Under 19s Most Consistent Player award in 1967 before returning to his old club in 1968 where he won the R. S. Reynolds Medal as Best and Fairest in the Essendon District League.

He returned to Essendon in 1969 and was runner-up in the Reserves Best and Fairest Player award that year. He also won the Reserves' Most Consistent Player award in 1973.

He had more consistent years in 1970 and 1971 and was often used as a fill-in when the regular ruckmen were unavailable.

Headlam became captain-coach of Diamond Creek in 1974. He took a year off to study in 1975, then played with Coburg in 1976 and 1977 before becoming captain-coach of Doncaster in 1978 and 1979.

He then returned to play with Diamond Creek between 1980 and 1984 and won the award for Best and Fairest in the Diamond Valley League in 1981 and 1982.
