David Grenvold came across from Glenelg in SA in 1989, and became one of Essendon's most reliable players. He was a rugged, courageous defender who was very consistent until injuries began interrupting his career.
He played 12 games in his debut season and the following year played every game, except for a two week suspension.
Grenvold injured his knee in a practice game at Moorabbin in 1991 and didn’t play a game that year. But he was back in 1992 with 11 games then played every game in 1993 including the premiership win over Carlton. He provided the side with another option for the backline and across the centre. He was playing at the top of his form for the next two seasons, representing South Australia in 1993, and being selected in the squad for 1995.
Then, in Round 7, 1996, he seriously damaged his knee and needed a total reconstruction, so he unselfishly agreed to step down from the list, allowing a rookie to be promoted. He retired at the end of the 1996 season and returned to Glenelg in the SANFL where he played from 1997 to 1999.
After his final retirement, he held roles at the Adelaide FC and then Greater Western Sydney. He was Chief Executive Officer of West Adelaide Football Club from 2017 to 2019, then became CEO of RSL SA/NT.
