Player Profile

Harry "Speed" Gregory was a solid and dependable half-back flanker who came from North Melbourne Juniors and was a member of a well known footballing family.

He was on the half-back flank in the 1924 premiership team.

He joined Coburg in late 1930, where he played until 1933 before coaching North Melbourne Seconds in 1934.

Harry's father, Duncan, was one of eleven brothers who played football at a high level. Jim played many games at Collingwood and later became an umpire, Colin played for St Kilda, Jack for Footscray, Fred, Arthur, Harry (Harold Valentine), Duncan, Compton and Frank all played for West Melbourne, George and Charlie played for Ballarat.

Harry's brothers both played for North Melbourne, Bruce (one game in 1937) and Johnny (156 games, 1926-1935).

His uncle, Harold Valentine Gregory, was a long-time committeeman at Essendon. The similarity of their names has led to confusion in their records. This Harold's daughter, Myrtle, married Essendon player, Ray Watts.

Harry Gregory retired in 1967 after being a foreman at Rouch's Timber Co., where he had worked for forty-eight years.

He died on 8th January, 1993.
