Jimmy Gordon was a rover and half-forward who came to Essendon from Elsternwick.
He showed great coolness in kicking a match winning goal after the bell in a game against University in Round 16, 1913, when he was only 18 years old and playing in his first game.
Gordon played in eight games in 1913 and 1914 before volunteering for active service in 1915.
He served first at Gallipoli then on the Western Front. He was serving as a bombardier with the 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade when he was killed in action at the Battle of St Quentin Canal on 30th September 1918. He is buried in the Sainte Emilie Valley British Cemetery in France. He was only 22 years old.
Jimmy Gordon's step-brother, Ewan, had been killed on the Somme in 1916.
