Fred Gallagher was a forward who came from Rosebud. He started as a half-forward and then went to full-forward where he put in some memorable performances. He was Essendon's leading goalkicker in 1957 with 34 goals. He joined Ted Freyer and John Coleman as the only Essendon players to have kicked twelve goals in a game (to that date) in the Round 8 win over Geelong that year.
He won the Club's Best Utility Player in 1956 and kicked three of the Club's seven goals in the losing Grand Final against Melbourne in 1957.
Gallagher struggled for games in 1958 and left Essendon at the end of the year to become captain-coach of Turvey Park in New South Wales.
