Garry Fenton was a follower and defender who arrived at Essendon with a big reputation from Golden Point after being sought by most other clubs. He had won the award for Best and Fairest in the Ballarat League in 1962.

He played six games in 1963 and 1964.

After this, Fenton returned to Golden Point from 1965 to 1969 and was captain-coach in 1968 and 1969. He represented the Ballarat League in every year. He then became captain-coach of Clunes from 1970 to 1972 and captain of that club from 1973 to 1978. He later coached Keith in South Australia in 1981 and 1982 to two premierships.
