Prior to that he was with Footscray Technical School Old Boys.
His career at Essendon was cut short by World War II and he only played one game in late 1937. He was one of the first thousand to join the Artillery and, after serving in the Middle East, he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in New Guinea in 1944, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After the War, he became a Brigadier in the Army Reserve.
He was a senior officer with the PMG and became the first permanent Chairman of the Country Fire Authority where he served for thirteen years.
His father, Alec, was a star player for Geelong (150 games, 1909-1915, 1991-1921; also 12 games for Richmond in 1916), and was later coach of Footscray. His uncle, Bill, was the first Geelong player to reach 200 games (220 games, 1902-1915).
