Paul "Spook" Doran joined Essendon after one game with local club, Doutta Stars. He joined the Essendon Thirds in 1957 and won their Best and Fairest Player award that year. In 1958, he was appointed captain of the Thirds and finished second in the Morrish Medal, the Best and Fairest Player award for the League's Thirds competition, as well as second in the Club Thirds Best and Fairest Player award.
Doran made the jump to the Seniors when he was brought into the side to replace regular full-forward Ron Evans who was on was on State duty. Doran booted five goals on debut in Round 12 against Carlton.
He later moved to defence where his speed, strong marking and good kicking made him an excellent full-back. He played in that position in the 1962 premiership team.
After leaving Essendon, he became captain-coach of Ringwood from 1966 to 1968.
Doran later returned to Essendon as a committeeman from 1972 to 1975, serving on the Management and Finance Committee and was in charge of recruiting in Eastern District Football League.
