Player Profile

Charlie Challenger was short and stout defender who came from Brunswick where he had played in two grand finals for a win and a loss.

He sought a clearance to Essendon in 1940 and played on a half-forward flank in two games early in the season.

He returned to Brunswick later in 1940 and played there in 1941 until he enlisted in the Army. He served with the 15th Infantry Brigade, spending time in New Guinea. An Essendon team-mate, Les Begley, served in the same unit.

On his return, from the War, he rejoined Brunswick in 1946 and played another 16 games before retiring in 1947.

He died on 28th November, 1996.
