Jim Campbell came from Preston and played one game for Essendon in mid-1908. It was an away win over Geelong in Round 9, 1908.
Late in that year he was cleared to Maldon and he then played with Ballarat Imperials in 1910.
He enlisted in the 1st AIF in September 1914 and rose quickly through the ranks becoming a captain in September 1918. He served on the Western Front and was Mentioned in Despatches for "distinguished and gallant service" in November 1917.
He died on 16th January, 1935.
