Colin Campbell was a top rover over many years and played in Essendon's Association premiership teams between 1891 and 1894 after joining the club from Launceston in 1890.
He was vice-captain in 1893 and an inter-colonial representative in that same year.
Campbell was an all-rounder with speed, a sound football brain and strength. He was also a magnificent long kick.
After Essendon joined the League he played in the 1897 premiership team, giving him his fifth premiership. In fact, his only three games for 1897 were all finals.
Like his team-mate, Gus Kearney, he went to Scotland to complete a medical degree at the end of 1899 and he died of pneumonia in Gateshead, Newcastle, England within a month of Kearney's death in 1907.
He died on 3rd April, 1907.
