Max Byers was a utility player who arrived at Windy Hill from Hobart where he had played from 1957 to 1961.
He had trouble securing a regular spot in the strong teams of that era. He played seven games in 1962 and 1963 and five of these were as a reserve. He was also an emergency in the 1962 premiership team.
Byers played for Numurkah in country Victoria from 1964 to 1968, the first four years as captain-coach. He later coached the Murray League junior side.
