Player Profile

Fred Buttsworth was one of the best players in Western Australia. He was a fine half-forward with West Perth where he was captain in 1944 as well as that Club's leading goalkicker.

He played with Essendon on a war time service permit while serving in the Navy.

A brother of Wally, he only played eight games in 1945 because his naval service took him out of Australia to Asian ports for much of his stay.

After the War, he returned to West Perth where he played from 1947 to 1953. He was a Western Australian Carnival representative in 1947 and 1950 and won the Simpson Medal in 1951. He also won the Sandover Medal for best player in Western Australia in 1951 and had earlier been runner-up in the award in 1944.

Like his father and brother, he played cricket for Western Australia.

His brother, Wally, was one of Essendon's greatest players.
