Greg Brown was a fine full-back who came from Essendon Grammar School and became one of the League's best defenders. He also did well as a centreman and half-back. He was a long, driving kick, strong mark and stuck close to his opponent.
He was runner-up in Essendon Best and Fairest award in 1967. He also scored third most Brownlow Medal votes at Essendon in 1967 and won the Outstanding Services award in that year.
He was full-back in the 1965 premiership team.
In 1966, he came back from his honeymoon in Queensland to play in a crucial match against Collingwood. One paper flew his wife (sister of Essendon player, Ken Hogan) back as well. After the game they flew back to Queensland for a few more days.
In 1968, he missed many games through injury and he lost form. Then, in 1969, he was runner-up in the League Reserves Gardiner Medal award and won Essendon's Reserves Best and Fairest award.
When he left Essendon, he played with Waverley from 1970 to 1972.
He later became an ABC radio and television commentator and then a 3AW radio commentator.
He returned to Essendon as an inaugural member of the Dick Reynolds Club in 1996 and served on the committee for several years. He later served as a Club director from 2007 to 2014.
Greg Brown was awarded Life Membership in 2001 for his service to the Club.
