Midfielder Craig Bird was traded to Essendon in October 2015 following a great career with the Sydney Swans, where he played 137 games and kicked 56 goals and was a member of the 2012 Premiership Team.
He began to suffer injuries and felt he needed a change, so accepted a trade to Essendon despite having a year left on his contract at Sydney. The deal happened very late in the trade period but facilitated the trade of Jake Carlisle to St Kilda.
He had a consistent year in 2016 and played 18 games in the year that 34 Essendon players and officials were suspended due to the Supplements saga. However, he only managed two games in 2017 and was delisted at the end of the season.
