Player Profile

Doug Bigelow was a strong and courageous follower and defender who worked unselfishly in the packs, blocking and shepherding for the high flying ruckmen.

He starred in the 1951 finals when Essendon lost the Grand Final and won the Club's Most Unselfish Player award in 1949 and the Most Consistent Player award in 1956. He was a member of the Seconds premiership side in both 1950 and 1952.

When Bigelow left Essendon, he became captain-coach of Coburg from 1957 to early 1961. He then coached Bentleigh in 1963.

He later became a committeeman at Essendon from 1964 to 1976 and was also a well-known ABC football broadcaster for over 20 years.

Bigelow died on 21st June, 1996.
