Matthew Banks was drafted by Essendon in 1995. His first year was riddled with injury so he only played 10 games in the Reserves. At the end of 1995 he was dropped off the senior list and placed on the supplementary list. In 1996 he showed great form playing at full-back, and earned his spot back on the senior list.
Banks made his senior debut in 1997 against Collingwood on Anzac Day in front of 80,000 people but only managed one more game that year. Curiously, his last game was the Anzac Day game in 1998, again before another 80,000-plus crowd.
He was delisted at the end of the 1999 season.
