Joe "Corker" Groves joined Essendon from Footscray in the VFA.
A clever wingman, he played eight games in Essendon's last VFA season in 1896 and all but one game in the inaugural VFL season in 1897, including the finals games which won the Club the first VFL premiership.
He didn't miss a game in 1899.
He joined Footscray in the VFA in 1901, playing there until 1903 before moving to rival VFA club North Melbourne from 1904 to 1907. He played in North's premiership team in 1904.
Groves died on 3rd July, 1961.
