Josh Green was named the state's best under 18 player at the AFL Tasmanian Academy. and was also named in the 2010 All-Australian Under 18 team before beginning his AFL career.
He was drafted by Brisbane with pick 32 in the 2010 National Draft and made his senior debut in Round 9, 2011, against North Melbourne. He picked up 12 possessions in the club's first win for the season and he finished with five games for the season.
A busy small forward, he was twice the Lions' leading goalkicker, in 2014 with 33 goals and 2015 with 25 goals.
After six seasons and 81 games, Green was delisted at the end of 2016 and he signed with Essendon as a free agent.
He played 17 games in his debut season at the Hangar. His three goals in an 18-point win over Collingwood on Anzac Day were a highlight of his season. He also kicked four goals in a loss against Greater Western Sydney in Round 11. He suffered stress fractures in his foot at the end of the season but was still offered a contract for the following year.
He was reported for staging for a free kick in a 2018 pre-season game against Geelong and was fined $1000 - the first player to be fined for for such an offence.
His 2018 season was interrupted by hamstring problems and he spent most of the season in the VFL team. Then problems developed with the bolts that had been inserted in his broken foot in 2017 and he need cortisone injections in order to play. As a result, he only managed seven senior games although he played out the final series in the VFL team.
Josh Green was delisted by the Bombers at the end of the 2018 season. He revealed in an article he wrote for the AFL Players' Association in 2019 that, while at Brisbane, he was diagnosed with severe anxiety and was put on medication and received regular counselling. He struggled with the constant pressure to perform and the constant social media bullying and acknowledged that it was something he would continue to deal with for the rest of his life.
