Player Profile

Cyril Gove was a fine wingman/rover from Collegians who debuted with Essendon in late 1913.

He missed the first game of the 1914 season because he was in Deniliquin (VSW) riding five winners at the Southern Riverina Turf Club Picnic Meeting. He only missed one more game for the season and was selected in the State Carnival team in that year.

Although Gove was a well-known amateur rider in racing circles, he gained greater publicity in 1915 when in the space of one day he finished third on Menthe in the Springbank Corinthian Handicap at Moonee Valley, was whisked away to play with Essendon and finished up being one of the best on the ground and then fought a boxing bout at the West Melbourne Stadium that evening.

He missed the 1916 and 1917 seasons when Essendon stood out of the League.

Gove died on 28th August, 1973.
