James Stewart is the son of former Collingwood footballer, Craig Stewart. He played for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and was recruited by Greater Western Sydney with pick 27 in the 2012 National Draft. He made his debut in round 23, 2013, against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium. He only managed 18 games (and 18 goals) for the Giants over four seasons and was traded to Essendon at the end of the 2016 AFL season.
He collected ten disposals and kicked three goals in his debut for the Club, in round 8 of the 2017 AFL season , helping Essendon to a 17-point win over Geelong at the MCG. After playing primarily as a forward, he later moved to defence. Although an ongoing foot injury limited his appearances in 2022, he signed a two-year extension at the end of the year. He returned to play in the VFL in 2023 but couldn't break into the senior team and was delisted at the end of the 2023 season.
Draft history: #27 (2012 National Draft), (2017 Traded to Essendon for #77).
