Player Profile

Barry Young was a forward who could be used in defence when needed. He played 53 games and kicked 23 goals with Richmond before coming to Essendon in 1994.

He was drafted by Essendon in the 1994 March Draft at selection number 20. His first game for the Club was against Hawthorn at Waverley Park in 1994.

Young was dogged by injuries in 1997 and 1998, including a broken ankle and a cracked kneecap, but 1999 proved to be his best year in League football. His best game of the season was in Round 6 against his old club Richmond.

Essendon and Young could not agree on a contract so he was drafted to Hawthorn in the 1999 November draft. He played 13 games for Hawthorn then retired at the end of the 2000 season.

While playing for Richmond in the late 1980s, Young worked at the bedding company now known as Jaspa Herington as a sales representative. When it hit hard times in 1991, he took a massive risk and bought the company. It has grown to become a leading manufacturer and supplier of quality bedding products.
