Herbert “Harry”' Wright was cool and reliable and the first of Essendon's champion centremen.

He came to Essendon from Ballarat Imperials and played in the 1894 Association premiership side. He played 48 games for the VFA team and then 86 when Essendon joined the League, giving him an impressive 134 game career.

Wright played in Essendon's first League game in 1897 and was a star in the premiership team in that year. He also starred in the centre in the 1901 premiership victory. He was injured in 1903 and only managed three games.

He was selected in the League team that played Ballarat in 1899 and 1901.

Wright also played cricket for Victoria.

He died on 9th March, 1950.
