Bryan Wood was a tough, strong wingman who came from Richmond where he played 209 games from 1972 to 1982. A noted big game player, he was Richmond's captain in 1981 and a member of their 1973, 1974 and 1980 premiership teams. He played with Blackburn before joining Richmond.
He had great speed and could kick long and powerfully. His baulking skills, spring and strength made him a formidable opponent.
Wood was released by Richmond who felt that injuries would limit his future career. Kevin Sheedy, his ex-Richmond teammate and then Essendon coach, recruited him to Essendon, where he became a valuable player in the emerging powerful side.
His experience was a key factor in the young Essendon's side breakthrough win in the 1983 elimination final against Carlton. (It was the first time in six attempts that Essendon had won an elimination final.)
Wood was an emergency in Essendon's drought-breaking 1984 premiership side, then played on the wing in Essendon's 1985 premiership team. He was also in the back pocket in the 1984 night premiership team.
He represented Victoria on two occasions.
Wood later served as Essendon's official runner for many years. He was inducted into Richmond's Hall of Fame in 2006.
