Michael Symons was recruited from Subiaco and was Essendon's number 1 pick in the 1991 National Draft at selection 8.
He only played three games in 1992 but consolidated his place in the team in 1993 and was unfortunate to miss the preliminary final and premiership wins in 1993 after playing 19 consecutive games that year.
Symons was renowned for his leap and took many spectacular marks, but he could be a poor kick for goal. He became more settled when moved to the half-back flank where he created many opportunities for the Essendon forwards with his courage and explosive speed.
He was limited by injuries to only three games in 1998 but played 14 in 1999 and was again unlucky to miss selection for the finals. However he was a member of the 1999 Reserves winning Grand Final team.
Symons was delisted at the end of the 1999 season.
He returned to Subiaco in 2000 where he won their best and fairest award and was runner-up in the Sandover Medal. He retired at the end of the 2001 season.
