Max Smith was a wingman from Werribee who played seven games in 1940. His last game was in the first semi-final when Essendon beat Geelong.
His brothers also played League football: Ron, 11 games for Essendon (1939-1941), and Clive, two games for North Melbourne (1944).
He died on 27th October, 1941, four days after being struck on the head while playing cricket for Werribee South. Tragically, the ball was bowled by his brother, Clive, who was playing for the opposition.
