Russell Muir was a quiet, unobtrusive back pocket player. He came to Essendon from North Melbourne where he played 40 games from 1972 to 1975. Prior to that he had played with Strathmore.
Muir did the job asked of him and was not afraid to back his judgement. He also read the game well.
Muir was in the back pocket in the side which lost the 1979 elimination final to Fitzroy and then played on the half-back flank in Essendon's 1981 night premiership win.
He was captain-coach of East Keilor in 1982 and then of West Coburg in early 1983. He then returned to play with Strathmore until 1984. He was a player and assistant coach of Northern United in Bendigo in 1987.
