Angus "Gus" Monfries was drafted from Sturt with pick 14 in the 2004 AFL National Draft. He was lightly built but had excellent ball skills and made a very good start to his career. He had always been determined to be an AFL player and while still at school, had sent a letter stating his plans, together with his junior football statistics and his school report, to all AFL clubs.
He was a forward player and was very strong in his attack of the football, diving into packs and flying for marks. This was reflected in his winning the Most Courageous Player award in 2006. He also won the Cheer Squad award in 2006. In 2008, he finished sixth in the Club's Best and Fairest awards and finished in the top ten in the awards in 2009 and 2010. He won the Club's Striving for Excellence award in 2008 and 2010.
He finished second in the Club's goalkicking to Matthew Lloyd in 2009 and was leading goalkicker in 2010.
He was one of the 34 players suspended due to the Supplements saga and was forced to miss the 2016 season.
In 2013, he requested a trade to Port Adelaide as a restricted free agent and Essendon received pick 51 in the National Draft in exchange. He became an important part of his new team, especially as a mentor for the younger players. He will be best remembered by Port supporters for his incredible Showdown 35 goal in the Power's thrilling come-from-behind win over the Crows in 2013. He had a snap at goal and the ball was bouncing towards the points when it took a 90° turn and went through the goals with less than two minutes to go.
He struggled to regain form after missing the 2016 season and retired at the end of 2017. He returned to Victoria in 2018 and played 17 games with the Western Bulldogs' VFL team. He then joined Castlemaine in the Bendigo Football League in 2019 and became their senior coach in 2020. He was appointed co-coach of Lake Boga in the Central Murray Football Netball League in November 2021.
