Fred McIntosh was a follower and defender who came from University where he played 25 games in 1913 and 1914.

He played 14 out of the 16 games with Essendon in 1915.

His father, Fred senior, had played up to 11 games with Essendon's VFA side in 1880 and then seven games with Carlton's VFA side between 1881 and 1886.

McIntosh enlisted in the 59th Infantry Battalion on 16th July 1915 and embarked on HMAS Nestor on 2nd October 1916. He was made Lieutenant in July, 1916, and was severely wounded at Polygon Wood, Belgium.

He died of his wounds two days later on 28th September, 1917, aged only 24, and was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium.
