Lindsay McGie was a talented follower and half-back who came from Essendon Baptists-St John's to the Under 19s in 1963 where he won the Best First Year Player. One of his prime attributes was his magnificent long left-foot kicking.
He made his senior debut in an exciting four point win over Collingwood at Windy Hill in Round 6, 1964, and only missed two more games that year.
He won Essendon's Best First Year Player award in 1964, but his career was interrupted when he was called up for National Service. He spent 1966 and 1967 serving in the Australian Army as a private in three regiments - the Australian Reinforcement Unit, the 6th and the 2nd Battalions. Six Essendon players served as conscripts in Vietnam.
He returned in 1968 and played 14 games but only one in 1969.
McGie went on to play with Port Adelaide from 1970 to 1972 and then Lyndoch in South Australia in 1973 and 1974. He later coached the Port Adelaide Under 19s in 1981 and 1982.
